âShe is a proper exemplar and you could benefit from her instruction. I am in a position to increase your dowry and will do it if you demonstrate that you are worthy of my help.â
âHow did you get so much money?â
âI will tell you when I can be sure you will not tell anyone else.â
After trying to instruct her sister, Elizabeth had another conversation to engage in. She must speak with Mr. Darcy. She needed to apologize and assure him that she had rid herself of Mrs. Younge. He would not allow his sister to continue their friendship with that woman in her home. Elizabeth valued Georgianaâs friendship and did not want to lose it because of the protective actions of her brother.
She sent a note to Darcy House indicating that Lady Susan and herself would be pleased if he would call on them at his convenience. Then she sat down to pen a letter to her father, explaining their close escape.
When Darcy arrived, accompanied by Colonel Fitzwilliam, they were again ushered into the cheerful sitting room.
âI love this room,â Fitzwilliam exclaimed after the greetings. âIt elevates my mood.â
âI have to admit that my mood is elevated by seeing you gentlemen this morning,â admitted Elizabeth. âYesterday was a difficult day for me.â
âI hope the information I conveyed to you was helpful,â Darcy said.
âVery helpful. I have dismissed Mrs. Younge. I am embarrassed to have defended the woman to you.â
âShe and Wickham are masters of deception. You could not have known of their duplicity.â
âRegardless, I want to thank you for coming to our rescue. It could not have been easy for you to humble yourself in order to provide me with the facts.â
âHumble is not a word I use often to describe Darcy,â the Colonel said.
âJealous is a word he uses often to describe you,â Elizabeth teased.
âA hit, Miss Bennet,â Fitzwilliam admitted.
âWhat is to be done about Mr. Wickham? The last I understood, by way of a letter from my father, he was ingratiating himself with Mary King. She has a dowry of ten thousand pounds.â
âHe most likely has racked up debts with the local merchants. I will send an express this morning to Colonel Forster to alert him to Wickhamâs proclivities. The usual pattern is for him to flee his obligations once they become a burden.â
âWill he not take up his usual practice of charming and deceiving in his next locale?â
âI am in favor of âgang pressingâ him into the navy. It is about time he provided service to the crown. It might save him from being hanged for desertion,â observed the Colonel.
âWe will have to act quickly because I feel that his desertion is imminent,â Darcy said. âPerhaps you would be willing to act as courier and deliver my letter to Colonel Forster. I will give you the receipts for the debts I have purchased. You can give Wickham the choice of certain death in Marshalsea or service in the navy.â
